A reading from Acts [2:1-21]
When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine."
But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
`In the last days it will be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams.
Even upon my slaves, both men and women,
in those days I will pour out my Spirit;

A reading from First Corinthians [12:3b-13]
No one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body-- Jews or Greeks, slaves or free-- and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

The Sermon

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Leader: Fill us with the Holy Spirit, rather than new wine, so that we may speak truth and act as your servants.
Bless your church and all who worship you so they may be your servants on this earth spreading your truth. We give thanks for all ministers, especially our Presiding bishop, Michael, our own Bishop, Larry, and our Rector, Duncan who inspire us to be faithful servants. We give thanks for our ancestors who wrote the first Book of Common Prayer may those revered words continue to guide us in our petitions to you.

Bless these United States and all our leaders, especially Donald, our President, Andrew our governor, and all those entrusted to serve the public. May they put pettiness aside, make wise decisions on our behalf and lead all of us safely into a sustainable and healthy future.

Bless this fragile earth, our island home and all its inhabitants. May we be spared from war, natural disaster, and further disease, especially Covid-19, so we may care for one another as well as the land, sea, and air for future generations.

Bless all our neighbors in our communities. We give you thanks for all who continue to reach out to the vulnerable in our towns. May we remember that “there but for the grace of God go I” and that we all may have moments of vulnerability and need.

Bless those who work for justice. May God give us all strength and wisdom to act for change when it is needed. We ask God to bless, comfort and give hope to people who feel powerless and invisible. Pray for a fairer, more just society, so that "justice and fairness flow like a river that never runs dry.” Help us to follow Your example, by looking out for those who each day feel that they are marginalized, who cannot find hope, who believe that they have little to offer, who are overcome by the challenges of poverty. Help us to widen our horizons, to make space for the stranger, to watch out for those who feel invisible, to give time to the outsider, to talk to the person facing silence, to restore justice and value. Give us the courage to undertake this, the determination to join with others in seeing grace in every human face, and the faith to embrace the opportunity in your name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul. We give thanks, Holy Spirit, for the comfort you provide to all those suffering from sickness, financial stress, unemployment, or any kind of trouble especially those on our parish prayer list… When we or they do not know how to pray as we ought, may the Holy Spirit intercede with sighs too deep for words.

Bless us as we mourn our departed loved ones, especially those we remember today. We commend them to your great mercy that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom.

By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life.

Though we are separated from one another spatially, we remain connected to each other in heart and spirit as we contemplate the real presence of Christ in our midst. We remember that Christ is truly present with us, not only in bread and wine, but in our daily lives. Through this period of our physical separation, we fast from a literal participation in the sharing of communion, while also knowing that we receive the presence of Christ through our desire to share the sacrament.
